金沢21世紀工芸祭「五大老パフェ」の器を制作しました
2026年10月1日より、金沢21世紀工芸祭の企画「五大老パフェ」が、金澤パフェ むらはたにて開催されます。
「五大老パフェ」は、前田利家、上杉景勝、宇喜多秀家、毛利輝元、徳川家康の五人の武将をテーマに、金沢の工芸作家がそれぞれの人物をイメージした器を制作し、武将ゆかりの土地の食材を取り入れたパフェを楽しむ企画です。
今回、私は徳川家康をイメージした陶器の制作を担当しました。
家康から着想した「質実剛健」を一つのキーワードとして、華美な装飾によって人物を直接表現するのではなく、土の量感や力強い輪郭、削りによって生まれる多面的な造形を通して、そのイメージを器として構成しました。
完成した器には、徳川家康ゆかりの土地にちなんだ食材を取り入れたパフェが盛り付けられます。
普段は作品として向き合っている陶芸が、パティシエの仕事や食材、そして歴史的な物語と組み合わさることで、一つの「食の体験」へと展開しました。
会期中、5人の工芸作家がそれぞれの解釈で制作した「五大老」の器とともに、ぜひ実際にお楽しみください。

Ceramic Vessel for “The Five Elders Parfait” — Kanazawa 21st Century Kogei Festival
From October 1, 2026, “The Five Elders Parfait,” a special project of the Kanazawa 21st Century Kogei Festival, will be presented at Kanazawa Parfait Murahata.
The project brings together craft, history, and food through the theme of five prominent samurai lords: Maeda Toshiie, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Ukita Hideie, Mōri Terumoto, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Five Kanazawa-based craft artists were invited to create vessels inspired by these historical figures, which are paired with original parfaits incorporating ingredients associated with the regions connected to each samurai lord.
For this project, I created the ceramic vessel inspired by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Taking the Japanese concept of shitsujitsu-gōken — simplicity, strength, and integrity — as a point of departure, I chose not to represent Ieyasu through overt decorative or historical motifs. Instead, I translated this idea into the physical qualities of the vessel: the weight and presence of the clay, its strong silhouette, and the faceted surfaces created through carving.
The finished vessel is used to serve a specially created parfait featuring ingredients associated with regions connected to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
For me, this project offered an opportunity to explore how ceramics, which I usually approach as an independent artistic medium, can take on a different role when combined with the work of pastry chefs, seasonal ingredients, and historical narratives.
During the festival, visitors can experience all five vessels, each created through a different craft artist’s interpretation of one of the Five Elders.
